I got to watch my neighbors Doe have her kid...
If you'd like to see the other pics then go H-E-R-E
* The momma goat wants nothing to do with the baby after it came out of her. She will sniff it & then jump back from it. She wont let it by her. She wont feed it when it does get a chance to get by her. My neighbor had to hold the momma still so I could get the baby up to her teats to eat... the poor lil thing wanted to eat but she didnt want it to. Why?
So what do you do?

Sometimes they just need to have some time to adjust. Pistol only wanted one of her kids to start with, but then she accepted both. Annie completely refused Fionn. I raised him as a bottle kid. If she won't take him, hopefully you can milk her and feed the kid with a bottle.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the lil guy! Yes, I agree with Teresa...sometimes it can take a while for everyone to adjust! Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteThe most important thing right now is the colostrum, but I am sure you know that. I have put the mom and kid in a real small pen and then got out of the way and watched through a knot hole. Eventually she settles down, but the situation needs to be monitored so baby doesn't get hurt. Sometimes, you just get to be the mom. Beautiful baby. I sure hope we get to watch him grow up. Wishing you the best.
ReplyDeleteIs she a new momma? Sometimes they are really silly! Her teats are probably sore. If she doesn't start letting the kid suck often, somebody will need to milk her out once in a while to keep her from getting engorged and her teats getting so big the kid can't get his mouth around them. Often times holding her still a few times and letting him suck will make the doe come around. I've been very blessed have have never had a doe refuse her kid. Like the others said, make sure he gets some really good slugs of colustrum and then you may have to bottle him, but hopefully she'll take him!
ReplyDeleteAWE.....poor little thing. I hope Momma has come to her senses by now.
ReplyDeleteMy doe had triplets last year and she rejected one of them. I had to put him in a different pen with his grandmommy to keep mom from hurting him. I milked mom and bottle fed the baby. This was the first time I had to do that. Hopefully, your neighbor's doe has settled down by now and is letting the baby eat.
