Fall Ducklings...

I know I said I was done for the year...
But the farm animals though differently...

This is Scarlett, shes 1 of my duck hens. I bought her summer 2010, she hatch me out ducklings in May, I still have 3 of em 1 boy & 2 girls. She went broody back in Sept. & was sittin on 10 eggs that I figured to be due today, Oct. 19. When I candled the eggs only 3 were developing. Well I wanted to move her to the barnyard, so I did & I messed her broodies up, thank goodness I had a broody BO hen to take over the job of hatchin out Scarletts eggs....

Heres the BO broody hen that adopted the muscovy eggs

They hatched right on time

Arent they cute!

Ooo yeah, now this BO hen is broody! No eggs are under her, I'm gonna break her... I've had to break alot of broodies this year.

* I've got one of my Silkie hens sittin on 1 Silkie egg due around Oct. 25. Then I seen one more of my Silkie hens sitting in the nest box, guess what... shes broody too!

A Very Sad Update:
I hate to have to come here & type this. I'm so mad at myself, I feel like a horrible person right now... I went out about an hour ago to check on the ducklings & found all 3 dead. I had moved the BO hen & ducklings to a bottom nestbox (they where at the top & I was scared they would fall out)... well the hen must have left em & went back to the top nest. I should have just taken them from her this morning... I really just feel like cryin right now, its my own fault, I should have knew better! I hate this part of farm live.

  1. I never have understood why people thought they had to break broodies. You just keep taking the eggs and the broodies eventually give up. I have two ducklings too that I hatched in the incubator.

  3. Sorry about the Ducklings. We have all made mistakes, but a mistake now keeps others safe later. All we can do is learn as we go.

  4. Don't beat your self up. You didn't do it out of malious. Everything happens for a reason. Have faith in that. Love ya girl. Big hug.

  6. How heartbreaking. I know how you feel and I feel for you. I always hate how my learning experiences usually happened at the cost of the animals. Forgive yourself.
