Candled last night & had to take out 8 infertile eggs. Then there was 34 & I put 5 of them under my 1st broody of the season, Mable. So theres 29 in the bator now, due March 20
(shes been sittin on fake eggs all weekend)
They all had to come over to see what I was doin, lol
Hi Jennifer, Don't you just love those broody hens ... I would much rather use them than an incubator anyday ... But, I am thinking of getting it out and buying some eggs off of Ebay and hatching them out ... that way hubby will have to build me the coop ... LoL Sorry about deleting my first comment. Blogger can't keep up sometimes! Have a great week. Teri♥♥♥
I must have missed this from before -- why do you put your eggs in an incubator and then under the hen? How does your hen know to start sitting and stay on her eggs instead of laying an egg and leaving it for you to gather? These questions may sound silly-- but in two years -- I want to have chickens for the fresh eggs!! (Wishing I could retire now!!) Thanks, Suzan
Tree Hugger: OOoo they're not silly questions and before I got my 1st chickens (bout 2 years ago) I didnt know anything about them. I've read and learned alot from just having them.
You cant make a hen want to sit on eggs... her body (or mother nature) tells her when she wants to sit on eggs, its called going broody. The hen started sittin this weekend and that means she stayed on the nest and didnt want to come off... they only get off their nest 1 maybe 2 times a day to eat, drink and go potty, they will not roost with the other chickens at night either, they will stay on their nest. So when your hen does all that, then you know shes gone broody... give that girl some eggs, lol.
I already had eggs in the incubator, they've been in there for a week, so instead of giving her new fresh eggs to hatch I just decided this time to give her acouple from the bator to call her own, shes happy, I'm happy its a win win :)
I just love seeing a mother hen and her chicks! Funny - I thought you had written Mabel on that egg. Maybe naming your chicks before they are hatched? : )
Chickens? I love chickens! LOL! BTW, tnx for your lovely comment on my shoot me post, and guess what? I just became your new follower, it would be nice to return the favor... clavs
