We've gotten alot of rooster this year, cant keep em all so its time to process pretty soon. Our neighbor is gonna come over and help us, we've only done 1 since we've had chickens and that was last year. I've got 12 in this pen, 1 out free ranging (he flies over when he wants) and I may have a few more young ones running around with my barnyard flock...

Nothing like farm fresh chicken! We have a freezer full and are having chicken legs from our birds for supper tonight! Your chicken and dumplings look gooooood!
ReplyDeleteHaving to process extra Roosters is not a happy part of keeping chickens. There are only so many homes that you can find for them and you can't keep them all. I processed 3 young boys yesterday. I only have 3 more to do in that group. The next group is only 6 weeks old, that group has 7 extra Roos. They need alot more time. I am hoping to be able to find at least a few homes. There are only 2 girls in the group of 11 chicks.

Something that I havent been able to do yet. It would definately be nice to have that meat in our freezer, but I, nor hubby want to do the daunting task. My hats off to ya' for having the ability to do it...

ReplyDeleteMatt - Your right its not one of the happy parts... its still one of the sad hard parts to me, but I know it has to be done and its food for the family :)
Trish - I just try not to think too much about it, it is sad but its also chicken life. I'm really glad our neighbor is coming to help us and it will be nice to have a freezer full of nice fresh chicken that we raised.
