Horns
The horns on a boer goat act as a "cooling mechanism" that connect to the sinus cavities at the head. The vascularity of the horn contributes to the regulation of body temperature in boer goats. The circulation of blood to the horn influence the temperature of the brain. Horns are mostly used to scratch with and are not used aggressively. Goats do use them to spar with each other during play fights but this does not lead to any injury. The goats horns are not used against people. (Found this and other info. in Wikipedia)
She is Beautiful!!! I am so happy for Ellie. I have all goat girls and they all have horns. While one does have to be careful around them, my girls are not aggresive with them. They do scratch their back with them and when being playful they butt heads.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Ellie on your new playmate :)
oh, i'm glad she has a friend. and a bit older one to teach her all sorts of fun things. :)
ReplyDeletetoo cute!
ReplyDeletelove the info!
Just remember, goats don't read Wikipedia. While most are nice about their horns, they sometimes can be aggressive with each other (around food usually or when hormones come into play). So cool to think horns are a part of their cooling system!

I love horns! I've been playing my horns and making beautiful music since I was a little kid. I don't know how those polled (hornless) goats live without them.
ReplyDeleteWhat good information; I didn't know that. Very cute goats.
ReplyDeleteI think you just might have a milker there : ) Just remember to watch yourself around the horns. They don't hurt on purpose. My bucks have half horns due to me not disbudding good enough. It happens. Is she a nubian cross? So cool that you are getting in to goats. They are very intelligent, loving animals.
